What is Colonoscopy?
A procedure used for visual examination of the Colon & Rectum is called Colonoscopy and it is performed with the help of a Flexible tube containing light and camera called Colonoscope.
When is it Done?
A doctor will perform colonoscopy,if a patient shows any of the following symptoms:
- bleeding/intestinal pain/internal hemmoroids/blood or (dark/black) in the stool
- Check for colorectal cancer or polyps.
- sudden, unexplained weight loss
- unexplained changes in bowel habit
- long-term, unexplained belly pain
What does it Detect?
Colonoscopy is helpful in detecting following diseases/disorders:
- Colon Cancer.
- Intestinal Inflammation.
- Ulceration.
- Bleeding in Colon.
- Diverticulitis.
- Colitis.
- Colon Polyps.
- Tumors.
How is the Colonoscopy Performed?
Colonoscopy begins with patient lying on their left side.Generally, a sedative (pain medication) is given to feel relax and drowsy.It is necessary to make patients comfortable and cooperative.Then, the doctor will gently insert Colonoscope (whose other end is connected to monitor) into the anus and slowly pass through the rectum and into the colon.To get the better images, the scope inflates the large intestine with carbon dioxide and doctor may ask you to change the position.
Overall the procedure takes from 30 to 50 minutes.
Preparation Before the Colonoscopy?
A patient should follow the following guidelines before undergoing Colonoscopy:
- Bowel should be cleaned/emptied .
- Follow clear liquid diet (which your doctor will give you) for 1 to 3 days before the procedure.
- Do not eat or drink for atleast 8 hours prior to procedure.
- Do not take Aspirin,anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning drugs for atleast 8 days.
- Inform the doctor about your medications or allergies. (if any)
After the Colonoscopy?
- Do not drive or operate any machinery for 24 hours after the procedure.
- Rest for the remainder of the day.
- Sometimes minor problems like bloating or mild cramping may occur but they should soon disappear in 24 to 36 hours.
Consult your physician if any of the following cases occur:
- Fever.
- Abdominal pain.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Coughing or breathing problem.
